A Dhobi Ghat with a Difference
The Dhobi Ghat in Malleswaram is considered to be the biggest in Bengaluru. It has the privilege of being the first modernised Dhobi Ghat not only within the city but also in the country. The people and their families who are depended on this occupation are now able to avoid all the suffering from health disorders due to constant exposure to polluted water, harmful chemicals & washing aids.
When Dr Ashwath Narayan C N visited Dhobi Ghat of Malleshwaram in 2008, the scenario was totally different. People had to stand and wash in a very unhygienic environment.
With the support of Bangalore Bruhut Mahanagar palike (BBMP), the corporator, Sri. Manjunath Raju, they made sure to totally transform the Dhobi Ghat. The uplift of Dhobi Ghat was completed and reopened on January 2010 with entirely new look. Saying good bye to unhygienic conditions, standing and washing problem, the facility was renovated with
Automatic mechanized five washing machines, four hydro extractors, seven driers, one boiler and two calendar ironing machines among other things.
Good amount of water collection due to the rain water harvesting implemented at the facility.
Each washing machine has the capacity to wash 400 clothes in 20 minutes and each drier has the capacity to dry 100 bed sheets in 20 minutes.
In view of water scarcity, instituted Rain Water Harvesting unit.
Self-sustenance model of running & Maintained by the internal finance generated by the Plant.

This implementation have drawn good praise among the peers and there are some discussions in progress to implement similar facilities across all Dhobi Ghats in the state.
